Giving birth is one of the most beautiful and miraculous things a woman can experience. The process in and of itself is miraculous, but it doesn’t come without its discomfort, restlessness, and sometimes even complications. As the baby grows within the womb, the mother’s body changes to accommodate for the space the baby needs. The most common reason pregnant practice members come in to see a Bentonville chiropractor is for back pain. While mothers may find some minor ways to temporarily reduce back pain, chiropractic offers many pain-related and other benefits for both the mother and her baby.

What Is So Important to Receive Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy?
While you may be able to see the changes a woman goes through on the outside during her pregnancy, there is far more going on under the skin. The mother’s physiological structure and endocrine system change in order to prepare her body for the baby’s growth and eventual delivery. These changes can cause an increased curvature in the lower spine, often causing pain and discomfort, changes to the pelvis that can cause growth restrictions, and postural changes that can cause further damage the spine even after the baby has been delivered.
Chiropractic and Giving Birth
The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found that women who received chiropractic care during pregnancy had an 82% success rate of babies being properly positioned for birth. Currently, the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) recommends women receive chiropractic care throughout pregnancy to establish pelvic balance and optimize the room a baby has for development throughout pregnancy. With a balanced pelvis, babies have a greater chance of moving into the correct position for birth, and the crisis and worry associated with breech and posterior presentations may be avoided altogether. Pregnant women under chiropractic care also report less time in labor, less pain during labor, and a higher success rate of natural, vaginal birth without instrument deliveries or unnecessary interventions.
